Controlled substance log
A controlled substance log is the required record of every controlled drug a practice receives, dispenses, and disposes of, with a full chain of custody.
Veterinary practices that handle controlled substances are required to track them carefully. A controlled substance log records what came in, what was dispensed, to which patient, by which staff member, and what remains on hand. The goal is a complete chain of custody that holds up to a DEA inspection.
Doing this on paper is slow and error-prone. When the log is part of your PIMS, dispensing is tied to the medical record and the signing user automatically, so the count stays accurate without separate bookkeeping.
OpenVPM includes a controlled-substance ledger with patient linkage, witness details for waste, lots, running balances, users, and timestamps. Records are exportable, and each clinic should validate the workflow against its jurisdiction and procedures.
